Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis in coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease, followed by discussion of the prevalence of these conditions and their impact on the individual and wider society. Management strategies for these conditions are briefly described and the evidence base for therapeutic exercise training reviewed. Guidelines on exercise testing and prescription are presented and justified, with a specific focus on exercise that is supervised and facility-based.
