Abstract
The exurb defies easy categorization, as it straddles the interface between an urban area and the rural hinterland beyond. No two exurbs are exactly the same. The shape and textures of the exurb differ across global terrains, due to different urban planning systems and settlement patterns, densities and intensities of built environments, differing geographical features, and different social, economic, and cultural identities, lifestyles, and flows.
