    Abstract

This conference contribution sets out findings from a pilot-scale study of family experiences of neonatal care - evaluating new intervention elements that had been introduced. Pilot sample was geographically limited to families accessing support through one North-east England Neonatal service. Parents were subsequently interviewed by a parent-researcher to provide a neutral/safe environment to collect feedback. Staff were interviewed on the ward, by a member of the research-team embedded within the neonatal service.

The research highlights differences in the degree to which parents and staff valued the resources, which reinforces evidence from the literature about perceived imbalances in authority and permissions/agency to contribute to the care of the infant. It highlighted the different ways that parents and staff experience the environment of care - whereby parents may be present for many hours with time to 'read' the environment compared to staff who move from task-to-task without that time for reflection.

The presentation shares the key steps in the co-design approach used to develop the new intervention components through workshops with staff-teams and parents/families. It also shares the design rationale for: the type of illustrations and affirmative-messaging developed; the permission-giving communication cards; and the Home Tips pocketbook.

Lastly the presentation shares the reflections of the parent-researcher on the process of development of the new resources through a co-design approach.
