Abstract

Gaining employment post-qualification is a challenging activity. Applying for and obtaining teachers first post is one of the most important decisions they make. It needs to be thought through and considered carefully. There is a lot to do, and being organised and prepared are key elements to a successful outcome. There may well be a session or two in their initial teacher education programme on applying for jobs. Teaching is an attractive choice of career for many reasons, and different people have different reasons for wanting to become a teacher. Modern technology means that many applications are made online, rather than either sending hard copy by post or attaching a letter to an email; however, some still require either of these. It is regular practice for candidates to be asked to teach a lesson or section of a lesson as part of the interviewing process.
