Abstract

Background: Evidence is lacking on the benefit of introducing a novel volunteer workforce on money spent on additional clinical staff to support patients in hospital who need 1:1 support. Aim: To determine whether a novel workforce to support patients across a hospital trust can reduce the spend of utilising additional staff.
Method: A Plan, Do, Study, Act approach assess the impact of introducing the volunteer workforce. Results: The implementation, saw a reduction of patients needing 1:1 support, leading to a reduction in the requirement of bank staff request, equating to a decrease in on additional staff saving £705,000. Conclusions: Introducing workforce made substantial contributions in enhancing the care received by patients needing 1:1 support through enhanced observations for behaviours that challenge. The money saved by employing the first group of volunteers enabled the expansion of the service to further enhance the psychosocial care received by patients, allowing clinical staff the ability to focus on the patients’ medical needs.
