Abstract

Children and young people in military families navigate a uniquely complex environment shaped by parental deployment, frequent relocations, and systemic transitions. These factors introduce significant emotional, psychological, and developmental challenges. Mainstream educational, health, and youth services often lack the specialized infrastructure, training, and awareness required to effectively support this demographic. Historically, support policies have adopted an adult-centric perspective, frequently overlooking the distinct voice and agency of the child. While modern strategic frameworks, such as the UK Armed Forces Families Strategy 2022–2032, aim to prioritize the visibility and well-being of military children, significant operational gaps remain at the local level. This is particularly evident in regions with low military density or limited cultural awareness. Effectively addressing these gaps requires viewing military life as a distinct social determinant. Moving forward, service providers must transition away from adult-led assumptions and instead embrace co-produced, youth-centered models of care that directly incorporate the lived experiences and unique perspectives of military children.
