Abstract
Chapter 5 examines how technological innovation and digital pedagogy are transforming nursing education, with a focus on flexibility, accessibility, and competency-based learning. It highlights the limitations of traditional models and explores how digital tools such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, simulation, and mobile learning can enhance student engagement, knowledge retention, and clinical reasoning. The chapter introduces competency-based education as an outcome-focused approach that prioritises mastery of skills over time-based progression. It discusses how flexible learning pathways, including blended and hybrid models, can support diverse learners and improve access to education. The role of digital portfolios, adaptive learning platforms, and immersive technologies is explored in supporting personalised and self-directed learning. Ethical, cultural, and sustainability considerations are also addressed, emphasising the need for responsible implementation of technology. The chapter highlights the importance of aligning innovation with pedagogical theory and curriculum design to ensure meaningful learning experiences. Overall, it provides practical strategies for integrating technology into nursing education while maintaining a focus on inclusivity, quality, and professional development.
