Abstract
Given the complex issue of today, we must recognise the dynamic nature of open systems networks and how entrepreneurial leaders are the drivers of innovation, altering the future of work, the way organizations are designed, and redefining whole industries. They are the inspiration for whole new ecosystems; the catalysts for raising entrepreneurial ambitions in a diverse range of circumstances; be it within Universities, government department, large corporations or even in civil society.
If entrepreneurial leadership is the mobilising force that galvanises participatory action to raise ambition wholesale, the real question becomes how? And by extension, how can we develop Entrepreneurial Leadership competencies through appropriate collaborative initiatives.
Better approaches to innovation involve a whole new school of thought that is predicated on new dynamic forms of interaction. Consequently, entrepreneurship, innovation and design research needs to investigate new organisational frameworks that rely on open source and connected collaborative processes. Such research informed curriculum development would provide better tools to enable future entrepreneurial leaders tackle hitherto unforeseen scenarios.
Design thinkers are knowledge-innovators who develop creative strategies for socio-economic value creation. The design imperative helps frame problems properly from the start, acting as a multiplier within decision making. A design led approach to innovation embraces ambiguity and flux while at the same time employing tacit knowledge to enable a broader range of solutions to be developed. Above all else design is the animator of all creative processes in other words the key discipline that makes creative thoughts tangible in the form of new innovations; be they, new systems, infrastructures or ventures.
Whilst Design Infrastructure is concerned with how different element of strategic design and entrepreneurial leadership relate to form new paradigms; Design Dynamics builds on Design Direction and Strategic Design as well as entrepreneurial effectuation and transformational leadership to provide a compass by which to navigate complexity; Design Dynamics can be viewed as the gyroscope that recalibrates these different elements to provide appropriate alignment for different and ever-changing circumstances/ contexts.
This paper introduces the concept of Design Dynamics; that is the speedy application of fluent divergent and convergent thinking that allows frequent adaptations and metamorphoses as a methodology for elucidating rapid iterations of novel, solutions. As such the new theoretical model of Design Dynamics aptly describes a more agile operating system for future Entrepreneurial Leaders in their practice of developmental innovation.
