Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: An overview

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) is a qualitative research approach that is concerned with the detailed examination of the lived experience. Underpinned by phenomenological philosophy and hermeneutic theory, IPA is interested in elucidating a phenomenon through a focus on an embodied socio-historical situated person. This chapter offers a critical overview of interpretative phenomenological analysis as a qualitative method to counter the mainstream positivist accounting research. It discusses IPA’s philosophical underpinnings, key tenets, principles, and assumptions, concluding with a discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting IPA in practice.
