Abstract

The fundamental characteristics of research data, and form of user in-teraction with datasets differ considerably from research publications. However, the majority of research data repositories currently use the same retrieval engines for research data as for publications, but most of these are ill-suited as a long-term solution for sustainable data re-trieval and use. This paper, through a systematic experiment, demon-strates the fundamental and deep-rooted differences between retrieval of research publications and data, and justifies the need for more re-search for building effective and efficient data retrieval systems.
