Abstract

This chapter introduces an extensive review of logistics, its changing patterns within the Industry 4.0 era, and its role in the digital transformation in Supply Chain Management. It discusses the historical development of inventory control systems, the evolution of logistics, the interaction between Industry 4.0 and smart logistics, and potential challenges of Logistics 4.0. Logistics comprises of a complex set of activities that require a collection of metrics to adequately measure performance. Logistics involves ensuring the availability of the right product, in the right quantity, and in the right condition, at the right place, at the right time, for the right consumer, at the right cost. The importance of logistics in business has increased over time. Supply chain integration, being time-sensitive to customer orders, and just-in-time applications on inventory management transformed companies’ business strategies, including their logistics strategies.
