Abstract

Digital technologies have a critical role to play in contemporary sporting contexts by aiding performance and reducing injury. Indeed, digital technologies have become commonplace in professional sports, with organisations investing financial and time resources to accurately and reliably quantify training and competition characteristics to obtain a competitive advantage. Such areas are receiving considerable interest and rapidly evolving. Accordingly, sports practitioners are besieged with a multitude of metrics from technology. Yet, this does not mean they are necessarily appropriate in all sporting contexts. Selecting the most pertinent metrics, given each sport’s unique constraints, is vital. This chapter explores the benefits, trends, and considerations, while providing guidance and opportunities for research regarding the use of technology for longitudinal assessment of athletes.
