Abstract

Mend the Gap has its origins in 2011 in a collaborative project between Lund University in Sweden, Lillehammer University in Norway, and Shaping Our Lives, the UK network of disabled people's organisations (Askheim, Beresford & Heule, 2016; Heule, Knutagård & Kristiansen, 2017). It had been observed that many social work students had done their learning in classrooms and perhaps in a couple of structured placement settings, and then came out as qualified professionals with power to make decisions about people's lives, without having ever really talked to any of the recipients of their services, or without really having an understanding of the issues service users experienced in their daily lives.
