Abstract
In the context of basic design course, which spans within the domain of multi-layered architecture, teaching students abstraction and perception of space requires a comprehensive process. The aim is to develop the existing spatial perception templates of students through multiple samples and trigger awareness by broadening their perspective. In this study, students’ perceptions of space through abstract and concrete concepts were evaluated using a comparative questionnaire. The goal is to generate feedback targeting to measure the extent to which the pedagogical outcomes and concepts were successfully transmitted. Spatial perception includes an amalgamation of psychological, pedagogical, and biological processes. In the exercise applied, students were asked to “define and identify space” based on the concepts of solid-void, space, and volume, using rectangular prisms transformed through the addition, subtraction, and transformation of form. Taking into consideration the configurations of the prisms, basic design principles and dimensions of the study space, certain limitations were introduced. 10 projects selected by the jury were asked to be evaluated by the students in terms of their structural and aesthetical spaces with regard to the spatial concepts introduced. The primary aim is to understand the extent to which the pedagogical goals of the study were internalized by students. Students were asked to grade the structural and aesthetical spaces created by the selected projects from 1-to-5 (1: very weak; 5: very strong). Student assessments were compared with jury’s evaluation. Comparison results showed differences. Opinions indicated as the source of the differences.
