Abstract
This report explores the system of local government finance in Ireland. It is part of a collaborative research project between Northumbria University and the Local Government Information Unit that is analysing international local government finance systems. Previous publications have considered Germany, Japan, Italy and Scotland.
The report looks at local government finance in Ireland in its political and economic context and charts the sub-national government structure in Ireland, its relationship with the central government, and powers and responsibilities that the Irish local government holds. It then considers the regulatory environment in Ireland and capital financing, and sources of available revenue.
