Abstract

There has been a recent increase in the utilization of nanomaterials for various applications because of their greater surface area to volume ratio than their conventional forms, which can lead to greater chemical reactivity and also affect their strength. Also at the nanoscale quantum effects can become much more important in determining the properties and characteristics of the material, leading to novel properties and performance. This chapter presents a discussion on the wide utilization of nanomeric materials as anticorrosion coatings and solutions for metals and alloys due to their improved chemical reactivity. A broad functional classification of nanomaterials is given with their potentials. Introductory discussions on the techniques for synthesis of nanoparticles, characterization, properties, and applications of nanomaterials are included to set a suitable background on the chapter theme. The chapter closes with a summary of the future perspective of research development and utilization of smart anticorrosive nanomaterials.
