Abstract

2011 Northumbria University BA (Hons) Architecture degree show exhibition. Work completed by final year BA (Hons) Architecture and final year Master of Architecture students continues the investigation of context and identity set in the region. This year, the BA Architecture projects have been situated in rural Kielder and Rothbury, as well as along the Tyne and the coast at South Shields and on the River Wear in Durham. The projects deal with briefs as diverse as preservation and restoration of both natural and post-industrial habitats to the reuse of a former shipyard to decommission ships transforming hazardous asbestos into valuable porcelain. The MArch students have developed architectural solutions to genuine social and economic needs, with real briefs to provide training opportunities and educational facilities for the Collier Brig Project and Headway Arts in Blyth. Themes of place and memory are also explored with schemes set around Newcastle’s City Walls, the former Fenham Barracks and in the lower Ouseburn Valley.
