Abstract
The aim of this paper is to begin to discuss and consider, the impact and significance of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), also referred to as ‘Legal Highs’. Research carried out in 2015 in one Northern English City, and the basis for this paper, focused upon the prevalence of NPS and types consumed highlighting issues in relation to which young people understand the composition of NPS; and the complex nature of their attitudes toward this type of drug use. In the session consideration will also be given to the problematic language of ‘legal highs’ as well as the impact this had across a range of services (criminal justice and beyond) which led to the need for a whole System response to the use of NPS in the city.
