The linear autonomous mechanical system under the action of nonconservative positional forces is considered. The effect of small dissipative and gyroscopic forces, proportional to the vector of generalized velocities, on the system stability is studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions of the asymptotic stability of the system are obtained. The matrix of dissipative and gyroscopic forces satisfying to these conditions is calculated for the system with two degrees of freedom.
