Abstract

Pragmatic stylistics involves the application of ideas from pragmatic theories in any area of stylistics. There are many different approaches to pragmatics and approaches to pragmatic stylistics vary in similar ways. As with stylistics in general, pragmatic stylistics has often focused mainly on the interpretation of texts, with less sustained work on production, and far less on evaluation of various types. There is a two-way relationship between pragmatics and stylistics: pragmatic theories help to develop aspects of stylistics; pragmatic stylistic analyses and theoretical discussion both test and help to develop the theories.
