Abstract

Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted in this study to explore the structural behaviour and design of Aluminium Lipped Channel (ALC) beams subjected to combined bending and shear actions. Finite element models were developed and validated using test results. The ultimate strength results obtained from the tests and parametric study were compared with those estimated using current design rules. It was found that the current design rules are too conservative to predict the ultimate capacities of ALC beams subjected to combined bending and shear. Hence new design equations were proposed in this study to accurately predict these ultimate capacities.
