Abstract

Punjab has traditionally been developed as an agrarian-oriented province. However, over the last few decades, the gains from the Green Revolution model of technocratic agricultural development have backfired, resulting in dwindling farm incomes and economic distress for smallholders in the state, along with severe ecological degradation. These multipronged challenges have led to an increasing discourse on the creation of a sustainable farming model in Punjab. It is in this context that this exploratory study adopts an ecological justice perspective to analyse the aspirations of Punjabi farmers towards sustainability as well as the barriers they face in the process.
