Abstract
This report sets out the findings from a discrete, small-scale qualitative research project (‘the project’) undertaken in the city of Sheffield in the summer of 2022, funded by the Centre for Hate Studies at the University of Leicester. Led by researchers from the Centre and hosted by the University of Sheffield, the project sought to primarily investigate how certain local incidents and events functioned as a ‘trigger’ that saw a temporary increase in hate crimes, expressions of hate and/or served to exacerbate inter-/intra-community tensions. Secondarily, the project sought to investigate what hate crime, expressions of hate and inter-/intra-community tensions looked like in the city and importantly, how these were responded to at all levels.
