Abstract
Sepsis remains a major reason for admission to critical care units and the recognition and management of sepsis has been given a lot of high profile attention recently to ensure that staff are well educated and that patients receive urgent intervention. However, how much underpinning knowledge do you have about the immune system and how it responds to invasion by microorganisms? What lengths will bugs go to in order to beat us? This workshop will start with a quiz regarding everyday terminology related to the immune system so that you can test your own knowledge. A “simplified” explanation of how the immune works will be given. The workshop will then explore the various techniques that microorganisms have developed in-order to evade the immune system.
This workshop will provide an overview of:
• Definitions associated with immunity
• Explanation of how the immune system works
• How microorganisms evade the immune system and continue to thrive
