Abstract
This chapter explores the pivotal role of educators in the design, delivery, and strategic leadership of Higher and Degree Apprenticeships (H&DAs) in the UK higher education sector. While existing literature often prioritises learners and employers, the academic workforce delivering these programmes faces unique pedagogical, operational, and institutional challenges. Drawing on insights from programme leaders and apprenticeship providers, the chapter examines how educators navigate curriculum co-design, quality assurance, assessment strategies, and employer engagement within regulatory frameworks. It highlights the demands placed on educators to balance academic integrity with industry relevance, manage compliance, and support apprentice well-being in diverse workplace contexts. The chapter also explores the emergence of ‘pracademic’ roles, professional identity development, and the structural barriers educators face in career progression. Institutional examples illustrate the transformative potential of H&DAs for both learners and institutions, particularly in widening participation and enhancing workforce readiness. The discussion calls for greater institutional recognition of applied teaching roles and apprenticeship leadership within academic promotion pathways. Through a focus on the educator perspective, the chapter contributes a critical lens on the sustainability, credibility, and future development of apprenticeships in higher education.
