Abstract

The formation of the Newcastle Group in 1984, brought together a diverse group of talented, practising painters and sculptors who were at that time living and working in the north of England and whose primary concern would be the promotion of the fine arts, the foundation and yardstick of the visual arts in an era when time-based activities, videos, happenings and installations were monopolising media attention. The other aim of the Group was to show work farther afield. Over the decades this aim was realised with over thirty exhibitions in eight countries, amongst the memorable being those at the Moscow Hall of Artists, at Newcastle, New South Wales at the time of the Australian Bicentennial and in Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics. This 25th anniversary exhibition will simultaneously be a retrospective, a reunion and the final occasion when artists now settled in Australia and California will exhibit alongside members of the original Group.
