Abstract

This chapter explores the origins of sandwich degrees which integrate work placements as a method to develop and enhance work experience for students in higher education. It highlights their development over the last 40 years together with the challenges of delivery, the duration (short or long), and whether this has an impact on the student, employer, or university. The authors also explore the benefits of sandwich placements and the emerging area of postgraduate placements. They have taken a global perspective on the development of sandwich placements and the importance of work-integrated learning (WIL), highlighting it as an area which requires significant engagement from academics, support staff, and employers. Finally, they look to the future, recognizing the longevity of sandwich placements and the importance of WIL as part of student development.
