Abstract
While the strain that COVID‐19 has placed on universities internationally is undeniable, the effects are felt particularly acutely at Australian universities. This is due, in part, to loss of revenue from international students ‐ a fundamental building block of most Australian universities’ business models. As a result, most Australian universities have announced and subsequently implemented various austerity measures. Many academic staff report increased pressure to take on additional administrative tasks following redundancies and a shift in focus towards teaching, away from research, as teaching generates income in the short and medium term.
