Understanding an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementation experience: the importance of organisational culture

Abstract

The study seeks to develop a greater understanding of the role played by organisational culture in the development and implementation of an ERP system. This assessment builds on the extant literature, which stresses the importance of organisational culture and appreciates the complexity of these systems, and by doing so, recognises the gap in knowledge relating to the inter-relationship between the two and the relative degree of failure in ERP system implementation. By means of a case study involving a single organisation and interviews with key internal stakeholders, the study identified the role played by organisational culture, particularly for the setting of the case organisation within the not-for-profit charitable sector, which shaped employees' expectations from the system and attitudes towards its introduction.
