Abstract

This study explores the formation of the Korea Hamkke Labour Union of Disabled Teachers (KHUDT) and the challenges faced by these teachers in the Korean education system, as mainstream unions have inadequately represented their interests. To this end, it uses the social model of disability and relational inequality theory to highlight the necessity of KHUDT and their collective bargaining efforts through focus group with executive members. Four key themes emerged: the complex intersection of rights for disabled teachers, negotiation from a position of disadvantage rather than securing future rights, inclusivity within the union to represent the diverse needs of disabled teachers with different impairments and concerns about the long-term viability of KHUDT and its ability to continue advocating for its members. The significance of the KHUDT for promoting disability rights and social justice in the Korean education sector is highlighted, as well as the need for ongoing support and collaboration.
