Abstract
This paper shows how consideration of pragmatic inference can contribute to accounts of 'texture, understood as 'the experienced quality of textuality'. It focuses in particular on the complex inferences made by readers before, during and after reading a short story by Alice Munro and how these contribute to texture in this sense, thus showing how work in pragmatics can contribute to a specific area of cognitive poetics.
