Abstract

This chapter introduces historical geography to the reader. We trace the emergence of historical geography as a sub-discipline and show its wide-ranging relevance. The chapter introduces some key terms and the structure of the book itself. We invite the reader to consider their own historical interests and how geographical ideas and concepts might be applied to these pasts. We also take time to introduce ourselves as authors, acknowledging the particularity and limitations of our perspectives.
