Mel Steer

Research interests

My research interests include social policy, poverty, social inequality, the social determinants of health and health inequality, austerity and changes to the welfare state and welfare reform. I’m also interested in housing, crime and community safety and applying research findings to policy and practice to effect positive social change.

I'm interested in realist evaluation as a method to understand complex social policy issues, complexity theory and case-based methods such as qualitative comparative analysis and cluster analysis to develop understanding of cases and how and why outcomes vary.
